Hunter is a student from our Dore Hattiesburg office. We are pleased to highlight his Dore story:

How did you hear about the Dore Program?

We received a postcard in the mail announcing the program coming to Hattiesburg. We immediately felt that this was an answer to prayer right out of the blue because we were in the middle of struggles with Hunter emotionally and educationally. He was having many difficulties in reading and comprehension, following instructions, social interaction and lack of confidence.

What were your goals for Hunter? And what other ways have you addressed Hunter’s needs in the past?

Hunter has been diagnosed with dyslexia, ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome. Our goals for Hunter in the DORE program were for him to improve in reading and attention. We were hoping for improvement in his grades and overall classroom performance, as well as for his confidence to increase. We also hoped that his coordination skills would improve. In the past, we tried many types and combinations of ADHD medications (stimulants and non-stimulants). None were successful with educational learning, and they altered his personality, appetite and sleep tremendously. He is still on a low dose ADHD medication which helps with general hyperactivity, but we have actually been able to cut out all of the other medications we were on since starting the DORE program.

What were the first differences you noticed in Hunter?

We noticed an improvement in reading skills within the first six weeks of starting the program. Hunter also displayed more confidence in the classroom by participating in classroom discussions and volunteering to answer questions and answering them correctly. His teachers started making comments to me like, “I’m not sure what you guys are doing, but it is working. Keep it up!” They saw a marked improvement in his attitude and performance.

What changes have you noticed at school? At home? Elsewhere?

From the first nine weeks to the second nine weeks, Hunter’s reading grade improved from a D (first progress report) to a B. Those grades have been holding steady this semester. Because of his dyslexia, Hunter was given a lower, personal goal of AR (Accelerated Reader) points he was to earn every nine weeks. The first nine weeks, he did not even reach his personal goal. The second nine-weeks, not only did he make his personal AR reading goal, he surpassed the class goal for the regular students. He has already surpassed the class AR goal again in the current nine weeks – 2 weeks early! He has become more motivated to reach academic goals. His teachers have given me a report that his reading levels have greatly improved, and they are saying that he is advancing through third grade with flying colors. They have witnessed Hunter going from taking a reading test over a three-day process to being able to complete one now in 30-40 minutes. These are the same teachers who were recommending that Hunter be placed in resource mid-term of the first nine weeks of school because he was struggling so in the classroom. Hunter’s social skills have seemed to improve also when interacting with other children and adults. It seems to be easier for him to make friends and have more balanced conversations with others where, in the past, his excessive talking would take over the conversation.

Would you recommend the Dore Program to another interested family?

Definitely! We already have recommended the DORE program to many others and will continue to do so whenever we can.

Its purpose is to develop to the fullest extent possible the talents and potential of its students so that they may be useful, productive citizens in their communities and our nation. Christian principles form the foundation of North Delta’s moral fiber. Very high standards in both academic and extracurricular activities are maintained to prepare students for college level work.
